out and about: benjy’s

4 Oct

in this on-the-road edition of out and about, we explore the culinary creativity of east texas – houston style. a couple weeks ago, i ventured to space city for one of life’s most joyous and anticipated events – the bachelorette party.

a college roommate will be tying the knot this weekend, and in celebration of her big day, all the roommates, plus a few other lovely ladies, ventured to bayou territory for a whirlwind 24-hour party.

the best part of the trip – besides the reunion, of course – had to be the delicious dinner we had at benjy’s. from the sleek ambiance mixed with near-tropical décor to the impeccable menu selections, benjy’s did not disappoint. who knew there were such hip foodie hot spots in h-town? ok, i admit, living in austin, i am a bit biased and – ahem – snooty about the dining experience, but i was impressed.

touting local ingredients and centered around healthy – but by no means expected – fare, menu items prepared by chefs  dylan murray and joseph stayshich ran the gamut with selections from warm pistachio crusted goat cheese cakes to sesame crusted agadashi and sweet tea brined pork chop. i tried the pan seared mahi, served with pineapple fried rice and chinese long beans, and was in gastronomical heaven.

have you visited this houston haunt? what are you favorite east texas restos?
